Fabulae Romanae Product Description

Fabulae Romanae (1993) – Fabulae Romanae is an intermediate Latin Reader. It contains readings derived mostly from Livy’s Ab Urbe Condita. A few other ancient authors are represented as well.  The readings provide a fairly comprehensive account of Roman history from the (mythical) time of Romulus through the all-to-real assassination of Marcus Cicero in 43 BC.  Students can become adept at reading classical Latin. At the same time, they will develop a firm familiarity with the historical and cultural background of Latin literature.

Close to Originals, but Accessible

The authors of the series aim to help students move up to reading the great works of Roman writers by offering relatively accessible selections. They facilitate the process by smoothing off some of the rougher portions as well. The preface explains that

In some cases stories have been shortened or simplifies somewhat, but the editors have attempted to keep the accounts in this volume as close as possible to the original ancient sources.

Fabulae Romanae has other helpful features as well. On the page facing each reading selection students can find a running vocabulary for the passage along with some explanatory notes. Additionally, throughout the book there are brief reviews of grammatical and related topics keyed to particular passages. These reviews appear in boxes on the same page or the page facing the reading. They use examples from that reading to illustrate the point under discussion.

The makers of Ecce Romani created Fabulae Romanae as an intermediate reader to follow books 1-4 of the series. It is quite suitable, however, for any Latin students who are making the sometimes rocky transition from “textbook Latin” to authentic Latin prose and poetry.
