Jenney’s First Year Latin (1986 edition)

Jenney’s First Year Latin (1986 edition) – A traditional, grammar-based approach. This is one of my favorite texts for use with homeschool students in 7th grade and above. Jenney is also the text that I used when I first studied Latin during the reign of Diocletian.  Unfortunately, I didn’t find it ideal for classroom teaching in recent decades.  It assumes historical background and an understanding of English grammar that most 21st century students simply don’t have.

Nonetheless, it’s easy to see why Jenney’s First Year Latin was once the premier introductory Latin text in the United States. It’s explanations of grammar and syntax are clear and straightforward. Jenney doesn’t overwhelm students with excessive or overly technical verbiage.  At the same time, it is detailed enough to provide a firm and thorough grounding in the intricacies of Latin usage. It also presents topics in a logical and easy to follow sequence.  Students will have little difficulty finding what they’re looking for.

Because of these strengths, Jenney’s First Year Latin is still an excellent basic text for homeschoolers, or if you’re going the autodictactic route and learning Latin on your own. It would also work quite well as part of a classical curriculum program in which students have received the requisite preparation, particularly in English grammar.

Honorable Service

The copies available here are hardcovers that have done honorable service for a number of years in a high school classroom.  Nevertheless, they are quite usable. They would be listed as in Acceptable Condition on one of the book selling websites. Accordingly, they show a fair amount of wear, particularly to the covers. They have all their pages securely in place.  The pages have some writing and marking, but it doesn’t deface or obscure the text.

I’m asking $48.00 a copy here, including shipping.  This price is below that of copies in similar condition on book selling sites such as Amazon and Thriftbooks.  The price is $40.00 each if you order ten or more copies.
