$25.00
Clyde Pharr’s Aeneid Books I-VI is a revolutionary resource for reading the first half of Vergil’s magnum opus. Pharr’s main innovation is a clever use of italics and what he called the “extensible” General Vocabulary List at the end of the book. There’s no need to turn a single page. Readers are able to enjoy Vergil’s magnificent Latin verse with as few hindrances as possible.
These copies are hardcovers with a number of years in a high school classroom. They are in Acceptable Condition. They show a fair amount of wear, particularly to the outside, but I have repaired and reinforced the covers. They also have all their pages. The pages have some writing and marking, but it’s minimal. Most important of all, the fold-out General Vocabulary List is still attached and ready for use.
Price: $25.00 a copy, with no shipping fee. $20.00 each for 5 or more copies.

Description
Pharr’s Aeneid I-VI
Clyde Pharr’s Aeneid Books I-VI remains a revolutionary resource for reading the first half of Vergil’s magnum opus. There was nothing else like it when it was first published in 1930. Newer books still mimic its format. Clyde Pharr’s main innovation is the purposeful use of italics and what he called the “extensible” General Vocabulary List at the end of the book.
A Revolutionary Text
In brief, he put all words used 25 times or more into italics. The italic type alerts the readers that they can find the word on a fold-out sheet at the back of the book. This sheet, the General Vocabulary List, folds out so that all these words are their definitions are visible. There’s no need to turn a single page if the reader needs to look up the definition for one of these words.
Words used less than 25 times on a given page are listed directly beneath the Latin text on that page. A third section beneath that includes helpful notes on grammar and literary aspects of the text. The governing concept is that readers should be able to enjoy Vergil’s magnificent Latin verse with as few hindrances as possible. For a fuller description of Pharr’s Aeneid see my review here.

Accordingly, they show a fair amount of wear, particularly to the outside surfaces, but I have repaired and reinforced the covers. They have all their pages (unlike newer paperback reprints, these hardcovers were made to last). The pages have some writing and marking, but it’s minimal. Most important of all, the fold-out General Vocabulary List is still attached and ready for use.
