 Ecclesiastical, Medieval, and Neo-Latin Sentences

Ecclesiastical, Medieval, and Neo-Latin Sentences is a great resource for those interested in the vast corpus of post-classical Latin. Richard Upsher Smith designed this book to supplement Wheelock’s Latin, but it will work as a supplement for just about any textbook series. It’s also a good introduction to later Latin and reader for folks who already know Latin.

The first half of the book provides practice sentences, and some explanation, that correspond to the 40 chapters of Wheelock’s Latin. Where the sententiae in Wheelock come mostly from classical authors, these sentences draw on Ecclesiastical, Medieval, and Neo-Latin sources. In the second half of the book you will find sixteen longer passages. Again following Wheelock, the text calls these Loci Immutati. These readings come from the Bible, St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Bonaventure, and more.  The thorough notes found in this text make reading these Latin selections possible and enjoyable for readers from any Latin background.

 Additional Resources

In addition to the readings, there are additional resources that explain the (minor) differences between the classical language and later Latin:

Appendix I: Some Developments in Latin Grammar Found in Ecclesiastical and Medieval Latin;

Appendix II: Brief Biographies of Authors Cited in the Sententiae and Loci;

Verba Memoria Comprehendenda (a frequent-word list);

A List of Source Texts Not Included in the Abbreviations;

Three Indices (Passages from the Old and New Testaments; Passages from Liturgical and Magisterial Documents; Passages from Ecclesiastical and Other Non-Classical Authors)
