Description
Cassell’s Latin Dictionary (Hardcover)
This is an excellent resource for all Latin learners. It’s easy to navigate, whether you need to go from Latin to English of English to Latin. It includes more than just definitions. This edition also incorporates English idioms and Latin spelling. It includes general classical information where appropriate, and it shows long and short vowels where not immediately apparent. In addition to that, this dictionary indicates irregular plural forms, cites and quotes ancient classical authors, and suggests paraphrases to express modern English in classical Latin form. As an added bonus, there’s a handy chart in the beginning for adapting ancient dates to our modern calendar system.
The first edition of this dictionary appeared in 1854. It was the work of a father-son team, J.R. and Charles Beard. J. R. V. Marchant revised the book extensively for the 1886 revision. D. P. Simpson put Cassell’s Latin Dictionary through another thorough revision in the mid 1950s. These books are a reprint of Simpson’s 1968 5th revision. In his preface Simpson explains that his goal was threefold. First, he wanted to conform the content to present day usage. At the same time, he strove to retain or recapture the simplicity of the Beards’ original resource. Finally, he wanted to show clear connections to the original classical material. He successfully achieves all those goals in this volume.
