$17.00 $15.30

Pr. Barbara Weiden Boyd has adapted this edition from Clyde Pharr’s revolutionary resource for reading the first half of Vergil’s magnum opus. Pharr’s main innovation was a clever use of italics and what he called the “extensible” General Vocabulary List at the end of the book.  There’s no need to turn a single page.

These copies are softcovers that have done honorable service in a high school classroom.  They are listed as in Acceptable Condition. Accordingly, they show some wear, particularly to the outside surfaces. They have all their pages.  The pages have some writing and marking, but it’s minimal.  Most important of all, the fold-out General Vocabulary List is still attached and ready for use.

Price: $17.00 a copy, with no shipping fee. $14.45 each for 4 or more copies.

Description

Vergil’s Aeneid: Selections from Books 1, 2, 4, 6, 10, & 12

The selections from Books 10 & 12 are what stand out in this volume. Pr. Barbara Weiden Boyd has adapted this edition from Clyde Pharr’s revolutionary resource for reading the first half of Vergil’s magnum opus. There was nothing else like Pharr’s edition when it was first published in 1930. Clyde Pharr’s main innovation is the purposeful use of italics and what he called the “extensible” General Vocabulary List at the end of the book. In brief, he put all words used 25 times or more into italics. The italic type alerts the readers that they can find the word on a fold-out sheet at the back of the book.  This sheet, the General Vocabulary List, folds out so that all these words are their definitions are visible.  There’s no need to turn a single page if the reader needs to look up the definition for one of these words.

Words used less than 25 times on a given page are listed directly beneath the Latin text on that page. A third section beneath that includes helpful notes on grammar and literary aspects of the text. The governing concept is that readers should be able to enjoy Vergil’s magnificent Latin verse with as few hindrances as possible.  For a fuller description of Pharr’s Aeneid see my review here.

Barbara Weiden Boyd’s Revision

Pr. Boyd prepared this version of the Aeneid for the AP Latin test as it existed at the time of publication (prior to 2012). She includes all the passages (and only the passages) included in the AP syllabus at that time. Readers can find large portions of the most widely read books (1, 2, 4, and 6). These she has taken from Pharr’s version with minor updating to his notes. She has also turned his anachronistic “j”s back into “i”s. Conversely, she has standardized some of the idiosyncratic spellings that Pharr retained from Vergil’s original (for example, -is for the more usual 3rd declension plural -es). The biggest difference is that she has included some passages from the much-neglected last half of Vergil’s epic. First, there is Pallas’ aristeia and his fatal combat with Turnus in Book 10. This provides us with essential context for the concluding passages from book 12, where Aeneas defeats Turnus in turn.
